Logan H. Roots (1841-1893) came to Arkansas with the U.S. Army after the Civil War. Roots was a United States Representative from 1868 to 1871, and a U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Arkansas in 1871 and 1872. He was a banker, railroad man, and a staunch Republican. Roots was one of three stockholders in the Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone Company formed in 1881, and was considered the "Father of the Telephone System of the Southwest."
